Steering kids to keep Christ as the center of the Christmas holiday season is sometimes a challenge. From long gift lists to the jolly man with the long white beard, our kids’ focus is pulled in many different directions. As parents, we have to be intentional in re-centering the meaning of the Christmas holiday for our children. The Manger Mission is a meaningful tool give parents a helping hand.

HOW TO USE THE MANGER MISSION CHRISTMAS TRADITION FOR FAMILIES

The Manger Mission is designed to use any time before Christmas. Start it the Sunday of Advent or any time that you choose! Read The Manger Mission book to the kids or allow them to read it aloud to the family. Set up the nativity scene minus the wise men. Allow the kids to place the wise men somewhere else in the house. From this time until Christmas, they may move the wise men around the house until the wise men finally arrive at the manger at Christmas. The wise men will then have completed their mission!

WHAT MAKES THE MANGER MISSION DIFFERENT

A quick Pinterest search reveals several different family Advent options. The Manger Mission differs from others that I have seen in a few different ways:

  • It’s grounded in playbased learning. Unlike a nativity set that is breakable, this set is made from study wooden blocks. The characters are sized just right for little hands. Kids move the wise men around the house, essentially “playing” with them yet learning at the same time.
  • Less pressure. Unlike other pre-Christmas Advent options, there is no pressure for parents to move the wise men every night. The children move it as they wish, and it doesn’t have to be every day. This makes The Manger Mission work for any family’s schedule.
  • Jesus-focused. The reason we celebrate Christmas is the focus of this family tradition.

We’ve been using The Manger Mission since Advent Sunday. My boys helped to unwrap the characters in the box and place them in our living room. They take turns each morning moving the wise men to a different location in the house. I also catch them playing with the characters at other times, too. It’s very sweet!
